THE HATE U GIVE
PUBLICATION DESIGN // 2023
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, a narrative that delves into the profound impact of police brutality and gun violence on a young girl who tragically loses a childhood friend. The objective of this undertaking extends beyond mere visual redesign; it entails incorporating an analogy or metaphor within the cover’s design. Given the thematic depth of the book, I conceptualized a poignant visual representation: a depiction of a gun with a daisy emerging from its barrel. This symbolism illustrates the transformative aftermath of gun violence, portraying the daisy as emblematic of growth emerging from tragedy, reminiscent of how flowers often flourish from gravesides. To complement the book’s atmosphere, I utilized a bold grunge font and textures evocative of its milieu.
